A bamboo mouth harp rooted in Ainu tradition

Mukkuri (ムックリ) is a traditional mouth harp of the Ainu people of Hokkaido and surrounding regions. Its bamboo tongue is set in motion by a pull cord; the player's breath and changing mouth cavity shape transform the resonance and timbre.

The package identifies this instrument's maker as Kimiyo Suzuki (鈴木紀美代). A dedicated Mukkuri maker, Suzuki received the top award in the non-metal making category at the 2011 International Jew's Harp Festival.

Features

  • Traditional Ainu bamboo mouth harp from Japan
  • Pull-cord driven bamboo tongue; shape the sound with breath and mouth position
  • Japanese playing and practice instruction card included
  • Sold individually

Playing & care

Follow the included diagrams to secure the instrument and practise a straight pull on the cord before playing against the lips. The openness of the mouth cavity and breath strength alter the tone. Avoid prolonged storage in humid places, which may affect the sound.
