A Cactus Rainstick from Chile is a traditional, handcrafted percussion instrument that mimics the soothing sound of falling rain.

Made from the dried skeleton of the Copado cactus (a species like Eulychnia acida that grows in Chile's arid deserts, especially the Atacama region), these rainsticks have deep cultural roots in northern Chile. Artisans harvest the cactus after it naturally dies (often after decades of life), clean and hollow it out, then carefully hammer or push the plant's own sharp spines back into the inner walls to create a natural "lattice" or zigzag barrier inside.

Small pebbles, seeds, or beans are sealed inside. When you slowly tilt or invert the tube, the fillers cascade down through the spines, producing a gentle, cascading "rain" or trickling waterfall effect—mesmerizing, meditative, and surprisingly realistic.

Historically tied to rain ceremonies (believed by some indigenous groups like the Diaguitos or Mapuche influences to invoke rain in the dry landscape), today these authentic Chilean versions are prized worldwide as musical tools for relaxation, sound therapy, meditation, or adding atmospheric effects in music and storytelling.

Unlike bamboo rainsticks from other cultures, the Chilean cactus ones often have a warmer, more organic tone thanks to the natural wood and spines.

Our supplier select only certified eco-friendly harvested cactus to produce the instruments.

Simply turn it slowly end-to-end and let the "rain" wash over you—pure desert magic in your hands! 🌵
