This is a very small rin (temple bell) made by “Sahari,” with a diameter of just under 2 cm (s) and 3cm (m). It has a cute, bird-like chime.

The cord is left intentionally long, making it easy to hang or tie onto things.

The himo (cord) used is “Shōken Karauchi” (pure silk karauchi braid), hand-braided at Shōen Kumihimo in Uji, Kyoto, and finished with an “Aioi musubi” (相生結び) knot.

Note: As this is a handmade item, there may be slight variations in size, color, and other details from piece to piece.

Characteristics and handling

  • Each Chibi piece is handmade, so there will be variations in color, shape, size, and tone.

  • The Sahari alloy gradually develops a deeper patina over time. Occasionally wiping off fingerprints with a soft cloth will help it age into a more even amber tone.

  • Slight surface roughness is inherent to traditional casting methods. Please enjoy these handmade characteristics and the way the piece changes with time.

  • To achieve its distinctive tone, the Sahari alloy contains a higher proportion of tin, making it harder but more brittle. Strong impacts may cause cracking or chipping. Even if there is no visible damage, the bell may lose its resonance, so please handle with great care.

Creating the Sound of Prayer: The Craftsmanship and Spirit of Nanjo Kobo.

Nanjo Kobo was founded in Kyoto, around 1800, in the late Edo period.
For 200 years, the workshop has been specializing in the creation of「narimono / ritual instruments」used in Shinto and Buddhist practices.
Nanjo Kobo craft each of narimono instruments, such as orin (standing bells) and shōko (small gongs) used in Buddhist rituals—entirely by hand.
But these are more than mere instruments that produce sound.
They are essential tools that create「ma / pauses」in prayer, purify the space, and bring stillness to the heart.
