Multi-reed design: Unlike many single-reed jaw harps, the Yi jaw harp often features a set of 3 to 5 reeds (called “leaves”) bound together and spread out in a fan shape.
A “speaking” instrument: In Yi society, it is regarded as a “speech surrogate.” Through subtle mouth movements, the player can imitate the tones and inflections of the Yi language to convey messages or express feelings, which is why it is known as a “talking instrument.”
